DallasCowboy.com domain expires

The Dallas Cowboys organization forgot to renew their domain name just as they were firing coach, Wade Phillips. On Monday, when many people were clamoring to visit their site for news on the team, they were greeted with a generic page from Network Solutions.

According to the Dallas Morning News, the domain registration for dallascowboys.com expired on Sunday night as which time the site was taken offline. While the team has renewed the site, it can take several days for the domain name servers to catch-up to the changes, leaving a virtual blackout on the official news.

This is a major screw-up, since domain names can be prepaid for many years or set to auto-renew. There are also normally multiple communications provided by Network Solutions, the domain registrar.

While it’s painfully common for domainers holding large portfolios of domains with multiple companies to sometimes lose a domain, it is almost unheard of for large corporations to allow such an asset to slip away.
